Cigars of the Pharaoh (Arabian Dhow)
1
January 9, 2019The box... the VERY BIG box.2
January 9, 2019Does that look like 100 parts to you?3
January 10, 2019A quick reference image...4
January 9, 2019Well... that was easy enough...5
January 9, 2019Taped the mast/sail in place temporarily.6
January 9, 2019Added a bit of sprue to the prow... now then, what modifications need to be done?7
January 11, 2019First major modifications. Cut down the upper level railing and cut the deck to move the mast forward.8
January 11, 2019There. That’s better... mast far enough forward and the hatch in front of it.9
January 12, 2019Boxed in the cockpit... err... lower deck. It won’t be terribly visible, so it’s limited to the area under the now-open hatch.10
January 14, 2019Painted the lower deck and added a few boxes. Just enough to hint at more.11
January 14, 2019Yep... just enough of a peek.12
January 14, 2019Does the mast look straight? Since I only need one, the smaller second one will be put to use as the bowsprit.13
January 15, 2019The railing needs to be thicker, so glueing and clamping is in order.14
January 16, 2019Added the posts.15
January 19, 2019Removed the over hang and reworked the stern.16
January 19, 2019Put banding around the mast and started shaping out the bowsprit.17
January 19, 2019Ok. Now the profile is starting to look like a dhow.18
January 20, 2019Now, time to load up some cargo. I won’t be able to get at it once the upper deck is secured,19
January 21, 2019First paint down on deck. I mainly need to reach the area under the upper deck so I can attach it and sand it flush.20
February 4, 2019Aye aye, capt’n. The cargo is all accounted for!21
February 5, 2019Time to paint the various bits of cargo various colours.22
February 5, 2019Painted the sidewalls and then glued all the cargo back in place, more or less.23
February 5, 2019Not extremely visible, but it adds depth to the model I think.24
February 5, 2019Now that the upper deck can be glued in place, I can get to work on blending in the stern.25
February 21, 2019Upper deck painted, and masked for the trim.26
February 23, 2019Some reddish brown paint for the trim... was it masked properly?27
February 23, 2019Looks pretty good. Only a couple of touch ups needed. Now for the upper deck.28
March 1, 2019The top deck railing finished off the main hull painting. Why green? I dunno... ask Hergé!29
April 6, 2020Now to figure out where to place the rigging... fictional thought it might be.30
April 6, 2020Some rolled up plastic paper makes a good sail.31
April 8, 2020An orange sail... why not? That's what Hergé wanted, that's what we get.32
April 8, 2020First bit of rigging done, and I've already pulled the mast off of plumb.33
April 10, 2020Rigging done... thank god. And added a couple of little sarcophagi... Tintin and Snowy-sized.34
April 11, 2020Painted and in place...35
April 12, 2020A bit of clear silicone, some clear blue/green Tamiya acrylic paint... and we've got water.36
April 12, 2020And we are done!37
