Had to repair/replace/omit some parts that were damaged by the vinyl tires.

good idea with the mounting of the flak... was it the plasticizer form the tires that damaged the plastic?
3 September 2013, 14:04
Mike K
Thanks Fabian. I copied the mounting idea from Shepard Paines book.
Don't know what plasticizer is but it looked like a chemical reaction. It softened and melted the plastic that came into contact with the tires. I was VERY lucky that no important parts were affected. Like the cab body or the windshield.

Great "Flak Truck"! These vinyl parts some kits contain are bulls**t! They spoiled my AMT Tigercat and one of my MRC Huyes. It`s the softener that keeps the vinyl smooth. But the plastic parts get smooth as well.

Exactly, that was what i ment... happens often with older kits and their rubber parts

There might still be a problem. The tires are still sticky even after a wash with soap and water, a coat of enamel, and a coat of acrylic...with plenty of drying time in between.

I herade something about boiling the softener out (something like doing the aging which happens in 10 years in 5 minutes).... if you´re interrested i can give you some more info

Thanks so much for the offer William, but they're painted and assembled now so I'll finish the build and see how it goes. If there's a problem down the road I'll deal with it then.
Fabian: Actually I would appreciate that info for any future builds. Thanks.
And thank you too, Roy.
So is this just an Italeri problem? Or does it happen to other manufacturers kits as well? I never encountered this when I built cars as a kid

@ Mike: Throw those tires in the trsh can, if they are painted, boiled or what ever. I built a Tiger Cat from AMT and even after years the rubber tires melted the wheels. There are so many resin wheel sets on the market, it`s easy to change now, but not if the model is finished.

Ok, first: It can work with some, but not with all rubber tires.
With this method you can try to get rid of the softener, which means that you can turn soft and oily/greasy tires in harder and flat ones.

Use an OLD pot and boil the tires with water at 80-90° C ( which sould be 170-190° F). You will see bubbles comming out of the tires.
After 10-30 minutes (or no more bubbles out of the tires) the water should be oily (....remeber, use an old pot😉 ) and the tires flat

I may be that the tire is smaller than before, so try it on a spare one first

We're in the home stretch. Tires are slightly less sticky than before so I'll wait it out...this'll be done in time for the local event on the 20th this month. shaweet.

Mike,
well done job!
Very skilful made weathering. I like the multiple layers of different sources of dirt, rust andoil streaks!
My favourite is the faded truck platform. Here it is the different wood colours to achieve a more 3 dimensional effect! Cool!
That`s modelling art I prefer too!
Great work!

Mike, that's a work of art. Great job on the weathering, first rate. What did you use for the weather process?

Weathering is nothing fancy. Wood was dry-brushed with progressively lighter colors. I added the woodgrain with a hobby knife first. Light spray of dust color on lower areas...various colors of pigments. Easy-peasy

Thanks Pietro. This was posted 10 years ago.😆😆 If anyone's interested in knowing. Yes, the tires have melted the plastic rims. Bummer for sure.

Hi Mike,
i imagined it, the problem of rubber tires is now well known, unfortunately it is always better to replace them with after market plastic ones, with the old Italeri kits it is practically mandatory
