Second completed building for my son's layout - this is Walthers Trains "Rural Grain Elevator". This is an excellent example of an early 20th century wood grain elevator but I wanted to do more to make its expansive exterior more eye-catching, so I added chips and dry rot to the wood siding using a panel scriber, coarse sandpaper, and an X-acto blade. This effect is more prominent near the ground or surrounding roofs where rain, snow, and ice would build up and would be less likely to evaporate from shadow. I also weathered the wooden truck scale, made tire wear patterns and textured the concrete foundation, added a new grain chute and bay entrance door, as well as some pallets, barrels, and a jack inside the loading bay.
Due to how absolutely massive this kit is (it stands over 12" tall), my camera wants to bump up the saturation of the red due to my lighting setup. I couldn't turn it down too much in post, so the red is slightly less vibrant in real life.
Believe it or not, craft paints are great for rustic rural buildings and this is painted mostly with craft paints, except for the weathered grey wood which was gone using Vallejo and GW paints/washes. Wood was weathered with acrylic washes then AK Interactive weathering pencils. Rust weathering was Vallejo rust texture, followed by streaking rust enamel washes, and then final effects with weathering pencils. Fuel/oil spills were done using enamels.
I debated on whether or not to add signage and ultimately decided against it. If you think I should've added some, let me know in the comments of this post.
