Sorry to read this but around 1990 Hasegawa issued a complete new line of F-4 kits. These kits, although rivaled by new kits by Academy and Revell, are still state of the art! The Eduard PE set is indeed aimed at those kits.

Hi Augie! You are absolutely right! What I meant is that Revell doesn't use Hasegawa moulds for their 1/72 F-4F. That's their own researched mould in which the panel lines are more detailed but the canopies are too flat and the nose too pointy just like their 1/32 kit.
For example the Revell 1/72 Draken and the 1/72 P-3C Orion are also Hasegawa reboxings.

Kind of stupid for them to keep re boxing this when they have a better product.

True! Seeing the cool boxart I would also be tempted to buy this particular kit. That's why I allways open scalemates.com whenever I'm in my LHS. 🙂

This was purchased at the local IPMS club meeting. Its for a build the same kit contest. Club provides same subject in 32, 48 and 72. You buy it, build it and take it to the Dec meeting. You can use any kit you want, but if you buy it from the club, and then bring it in for the meeting, they will reimburse you.

Got the seams pretty much taken care of. Underside painted light gray with a quick coat of white over that. Masked up and some bare metal silver shot on the leading edges for chipping. Going to try dabbing masking solution with a brush for the first time.
I also decided to go ahead and diorama it a bit with the Hasegawa weapons loading kit. Tractor is mostly done. Got to weather it then I will put the wheels on for real.

Ekki, hopefully I dont disappoint.
Ray, as I said, I am not a fan of them re boxing a kit that is clearly inferior to their second effort. It is definitely a 40+ year old effort.

Donald, to make it worse, this kit *is* the "second effort", there was one before this tooling. And they still sell that first one, also. It is available as an "F-4M/K", even though it is still just a thin winged F-4B with two Spey exhaust cans added in. Still has the extremely awful bombs and racks, everything except the engines is that old F-4B kit. To add insult to injury, the three tooling sets have different wing sizes and shapes, too.

yes, this kit from the late 60's tooling (second Hasegawa Phantom tooling),,,,,,a completely different tooling from the earlier 1960's Hasegawa kits.
The giveaway is that the wings are different shapes and sizes between the second tooling (F-4E, etc) and the first tooling (F-4J/D/K, with F-4B shapes, but without nose sensor)

both wings are different from the third boxing set (the Monogram, boxed for Japan domestic sales) and the fourth (the popular "modular" series that started as the "Blue Box Hasegawa Ka series)

I was going to send you to the timelines,,,,,,,but, I see that they are messed up again, to the point that the Italeri F-4S is shown as coming *after* the Tamiya rebox of them, and that they are again linked to the Bilek F-4G kits, even though those are different toolings.
So, nevermind,,,,,I will just link you to my site after I get them all entered over there, with the actual boxings grouped together by the real toolings that made them all.

Yeah, my Italeri F-4S turned out to be a putty monster, too. So, it is not a case of the molds getting old,,,,,,,it was just ill fitting from the start. (glad you posted, Scott, I thought I was doing something wrong with that kit, lol)

What is the item number for that set? There is a way to tell by looking at the shape of some of the etch parts on the fret. Since Hasegawa did things so differently on the second tooling (your's) and the current series, we can look at detail shapes and tell which kit it is for. Unseen, I'd bet it is for the current tooling, just because of how long that kit has been out, and the "newness" of the Eduard sets. But, it is also possible that Eduard decided to upgrade that old tooling, since it is still being sold.

Donald, I just looked at all of the Eduard Zoom sets that I have and I can guarantee you that all of those are for the New tooled Hasegawa kits. Right on the front page of the instructions, above the seat illustrations for those PE parts, they tell you that the seats are made up from the Q sprue part numbers. Your kit didn't have that A through X part numbering system, that is new kit nomenclature.
They still would be an enhancement for your cockpit, though, just modify the plastic so that the parts fit.
F-4E Zoom is part number SS201, if that is any help.

Well, the kit I have has no instrument panels. I tried to make them out of sheet plastic, but they were way too big. After many incremental cut downs, I realized there just isnt the room in there for them. It was a matter of cutting down the PE parts as they were too big for the kit parts. And I have plenty of stuff left over I cant use.

This might work for your kit. When I got the Navy Eduard Zoom sets, I copied them with a color copier on clear overhead plastic projection sheets. Then, when I built/build a first generation kit, I just cut the color plastic parts off with a pair of scissors, since that generation also didn't have a cockpit made out of plastic parts, either.
But, since your model is so far along, that wouldn't work for this build,,,,,,,,,and I'd bet after fighting this model already, you won't be buying another for later on

And the loading equipment is mostly finished. I did some more work on the paint. I was going to go back and spray lightened colors to show fading, but I think the sanding with fine grit has accomplished that. So just touch up spraying to do.
Not sure if I over did the chipping though.

The camouflage looks nice but the amount of chipping is too much indeed. Before the airflow rubs down the paint through the primer up to the bare metal the ground crew would have put the jet into the paint shed or at least do some patch painting. Also the ground equipment would be very clean. An airfield is kept very clean to prevent aircraft sucking in debris. Vehicles aren't allowed to go off the tarmac for that reason.

Alrighty then. I will paint over that. And remove some of the mud. Though I am modeling the plane on PSP, and the equipment did get a bit dirty. I probably did go over board on that too. I will remove a good bit of that.
Thank you sir! 🙂

Well, got all the decals on. Dirtied her up. Its hard to tell on the top side due to the camo, but its obvious on the white underside. Only two missiles from the kit attached. I am doing a load out with a pave spike pod and the gun pod. And GBU 10s and SUU 30 bombs. The GBUs will be on, the SUUs will be on the weapons dolly.
So, i still have to do the weapons and then the figures and that will about wrap it up. Hopefully be done in a week or so. I set up the diorama to see if it would look as good as I thought. I rather like.

And the observant folks will not the flames on the nose have become a sharks mouth.
For some reason, I did not bother to check to make sure the two sides were even. And they were off a noticeable amount. And I had sealed them in with dullcoat. So, I had two choices. Live with that or put the shark mouth on even if it doesnt match that particular plane.
I can live with it being not totally accurate over the two sides being wonky.

OK, the build the same subject contest was at the IPMS meeting last night. I took second. The Jap F-4 in the last pic took first, and rightfully so. I was happy with second as there were a lot of very good builds present. Not like there were only two entries. LOL
And since they were ALL Phantoms, there was no I am going to vote for the P-51 that is clearly not as good as the Eagle but I am WWII guy bullshit that tends to happen. All the same plane, gotta vote on merit more than anything else.

Album info
Hasegawas many times over reboxed 1/72 Phantom. Not impressed. No control panels, bad fit, woeful detail.
As I am an idiot, I managed to delete the pics of the ejection seats and cockpit. The Eduard PE set is nice. BUT, I think there must be a different 1/72 Hasegawa F-4E as everything in the PE set is too big for this kit.
