April 11, 2023Look!! The Model Factory Hiro 1/12 Ford Cosworth DFV V8 kit that came with their F1 cars, had workable pistons. Awesome detail that will sadly never be seen again after its sealed up. Background sounds from the first series of MST3K, Women of the Prehistoric Planet lol ? plus this took far too long to make, mental.13

April 11, 2023This is what I'm building at the moment. Elf Tyrrell Ford 006/2 1973 late season. Rear wing removed and the third oil cooler precariously placed on the anti roll bar, in front of the New for 73 huge air intakes for the rear brakes. Brilliant photo, although in black and white, it shows how dark the gearbox is, how matt the wheel hub assembly is, how much piping is around the end of the Hewland FG400 5-speed manual ZF gearbox, and that the exhaust isn't shiny silver. Lovely bit of engine [****].17

April 12, 2023In the newer MFH kits, dealing with F1 cars from 1967-1983, you only get a basic DFV, without all the internals. It's a shame, but it makes them cheaper and easier to build. I'm just going to glue it all in there, as you can't remove anything later. I suspect this kit was designed for garage dioramas, as at one time you could buy a full 1970s garage, equipment and mechanics as kits.21

April 12, 2023That's it for today, lots of drilling, cleaning, polishing and sanding, and lots more to come. Still only dry fitted, starting to look familiar now though. It's slow work, but it's fun. I'm going to need to invest in some new drill bits.25

April 13, 2023That's the main engine block, dry sump, cylinder heads and head covers done. Next the oil, water and fuel pumps. As its a dry oil sump, all the pumps are either side under the exhaust systems, to keep everything low and compact for F1 racing.30

April 13, 2023Tyre weathering test. Just watered down acrylic paint, rubbed off with a bit of water. Scuffed up the tyres and GoodYear logo though. One thing I'm not happy about though, the tyres have a sag in the middle, due to being hollow, and the wheels being turned metal, I'll have to find something suitable to fill the void at some point... tbh, I expected a little bit better from MFH tyres, especially given there price.32

April 14, 20231/12 model factory hiro 1973 elf Tyrrell Ford 006. Made a start on the front left wheel. Added the air valve, and anti tyre spin bolts that come in the kit, scratched wheel weights from plasticard. Think it looks ok. Matt black, weathered, with the edges rubbed down to the metal.40

April 16, 2023I'm converting my 006, to Francois Cevert's number 6, second place car from the German Grand Prix. Made a start on the wheels and tyres, added the airvalves, tyre bolts, and scratch built wheel weights. Then weathered them up to look used, at the end of a race. Not quite finished yet, but almost there. Actually fun, intense, but fun.42

May 10, 2024WIP, Model Factory Hiro 1/12 1973 elf Tyrrell Ford V8 Cosworth DFV. Wow, never thought I'd even own one of these, nevermind start building one. Tub is bolted and glued together, main lump of the V8 is bonded together, aswell as the gearbox as seperate units. I can start adding details and painting the three main areas as I go. Thinking of building it as either the German or Italian GP versions.47
