Ever since I saw this fabulous redesign of the original Wing Commander 2 game's "Dralthi" (the antagonists' ships) by "Hangar B Productions", I wanted to scratchbuild one for myself. To me it's one of the more iconic designs and within the games' lore lovingly called "pancake". There's just something about the shape of those "wings", as well as its flat appearance, which I like very much.
I started this scratch build around June last year (2021) and just recently finished it. On average I probably worked around 2 - 3 hours per day on it. It differs slightly from the inspiration, mainly due to my addiction like need to greeble some areas. Especially on the underside, where a lot of piping and machinery is exposed. Since the pilots of these ships are a feline alien race, I thought it's fitting, since cats are VERY exposed on their bellies as well and will defend that area to the death (pro-tip: do not scratch cats' bellies just willy nilly). The scale is approx. 1/48 scale, which makes the build nice chonky (it's about 320 x 320 mm in width and length) and also because I still have a ton of USAF pilots in this scale. The head comes from a 3D printed Tiger in 1/48th scale. The original pilot's head got mauled and only the helmet was left.
Other than that there is nothing special about it. It's basically just layers and layers of polystyrene sheets, glued and sometimes forced into place and then I basically just added panel lines and some minor detailing here and there. It's pretty straight forward once you look at the build diary.
