late 1945, Bavaria: A civilian on a German motorcycle is talking with some GIs who have stopped to take a break with their Deuce-and-a-half. The truck is full of supplies. The civilian appears to be trying to trade German pistols, helmets, and other paraphenalia for oranges to these guys who clearly hadn’t seen any combat. The civilian is my grandfather; a fictionalized depiction of a story my dad told me that his dad had a motorcycle and would drive around scrounging stuff and one day he came back with fresh oranges.
