As man cave is taken over by the kids, I can't do any painting. So I started another project. As a kid I always wanted this kit. Now I've got it and... it's not up to today's standard. No surprise of course, but the cockpit consists of a pilot figure, nothing more. So I'll depict her as a derelict plane. Faded paint, dirty streaks and a mossy canopy. So, once more a build of firsts.

Not too much moss Spanjaard, not a lot of that in the Desert where they live, or die slowly.

Oh oh. I should have known that Choppa would be drawn to something not too regular. Now I have to match his standard 😉
I realise the painting will have to make the difference. And I'm not the best painter when it comes to chipping, fading etc. Something new to learn 👍

Crazy story Choppa 👍
Please dont tell Bernhard Schrock, but I just went off the right track when priming this thing.

I hate how fantastically good that you build these old models, Martin. Good work so far. Watching.

Been ill all week and just a bit better today. So after everybody left after my daughters birthday party, I was bold enough to spray Revell 99 aluminium. In some places added a drop of black.
Not sure if it was a good idea.... Luckily I get a top coat of French navy blue 🙂 AND everything mushy I can find. Hope is still alive. If it dies I just blame Greg and his demands 😉

Looking great so far Martin! This is the part where things really start to get fun (for me, at least LOL)

Well, let's just remember that derelicts come in many shapes, sizes and stages... And excuses are plentiful and handy... and can be used as justification whenever necessary. Trust me, I use them all the time!
I am glad that you've recovered sufficiently to continue to provide us with entertainment, 'cause that's what it's really all about... isn't it? 😉

Okay Mates, I'll take it slow untill I'm sufficiently recovered.
Could not resist to try a bit of moss. Looks fine but lacks a bit of texture.

Thanks everybody for your concerned words.
Timmy, I DO know the difference between ill and sick 😉
Choppa, I tried a different experiment. Just some dust pigment, after drying slimed it up with the washes. It looks way better (at least that's what I think)

I'm fantastic in getting great ideas, if I say so myself. Safly enough, I'm mediocre at best in executing those ideas.

The French Navy blue is a bit too dark. Will use this as the darkest shade then 😎. Solved!

Okay then. Another first. I used rock salt for masking for the first time. Then sprayed Ammo's Sea Blue, then lightened with Ammo's Intermediate Blue, then lightened some more with Ammo's RLM65, then added an overdose of Vallejo white.
I'm having a hard time removing all of the salt. Perhaps it can double up as some moss (after painting)?
I am amazed at how easy it is to do this salt thing.
Next time I'll prepare a plan before painting, might help....

Hey Martin try using a lightly DAMP tooth brush. depending on what your removing they have soft, med, and stiff bristles.

Mmm, a damp brush on freshly painted acrylic. You sure that's a good idea? Will try the next time on a scrap piece

Actually Martin a damp stipple brush (tooth ?) helps the chipping effect along nicely 🙂
But either way it looks effective thus far, as you suggest those lumps could be mossed up with some dust and paint etc.

For freshly painted acrylic, I would wait a few hours first, 2-3, then with soft brush alone , then go over spots with barely damp lightly then increase your pressure if needed. Yea for acrylics use the soft brush, depending on how it is, maybe a medium one. acrylics moisten the salt more and can give different effects depending on time left on and technique.

Question!
Would leaving the salt under the paint simulate peeling paint on an aged surface or are there better techniques for that?

Look up chipping fluid (hair spray technique)
Apply base paint
apply chipping fluid
apply top coat
use a damp stippling brush to scrub away paint to leave a pealing paint effect 🙂
excess salt just looks like lumps on the surface which can be made to look some kind of debris but it doesn't look like pealing paint though

One thing that I learned using the hairspray technique is to only do it one layer at a time. It might seem simple, but I assumed that having twolayers of paint in a cammo pattern partially sit over one complete "unstable" layer of hairspray would be sufficient. I wasn't trying to do anything fancy with multiple rust patterns showing through, I just wanted to take of some paint around the edges. It didn't work though. The layer of paint directly on top of the hairspray came off... the second layer did not.

Peter, leaving a little of the unscrubbed salt debris can help simulate a rusted area around the paint chip with rust colored pastel or just leave as bubbled paint around chip.

Thought it might! Rust isn't flat with with colour added.it bubbles and bursts over time.

After some delay, finally some work done on this wreck. Dirtied her up with some oils.
Took some of the shine off the exhaust.

Even dirtier now. Added some pigments as base for the moss. Also primed and preshaded the tarpaulin

Thanks everybody. I need a little advice. The tarp, don't want it greenish or blueish as the plane is datk enough. Grey would make the total picture a bit depressing. Could a faded orange tarp work, or should I go with grey and drown myself in beer 😉

You know Martin, when you started this project you said the word "derelict". I immediately thought of that plane boneyard in the US, Arizona I think. Anyway, it's in a desert because deserts are dry and preserve things like murder victim's bodies and aeroplanes and things. But you being Dutch think of rising damp and yucky stuff like moss and lichen. Interesting perspective. Told you I had an inactive mind.

Peter, a dry bones Arizona plane WAS my idea at the start. But fit and overall detailing (or rather lack thereof) made it necessary to hide some stuff. Luckily this plane was used by the french as well, so a dark grey bird in some unknown French airbase was born.
Thanks Lode. I always mix up my Corsaders and Crusairs. But I like this one as well.

Dutch don't be afraid. Just buy an old, cheap kit and give your skills a whirl. Bought this one at ESM in Houten for next to nothing. I never did fading with oils before, or using pigments for moss, or make a tarp from a tissue. But most came out ok, some very nice and perhaps I need to practice some more on others. But hey, I'm having fun with this one!

You've been doing a great job on this one Martin. I like how the project has evolved and you've inspired me to try a "derelict"of a completely different sort as well. Thanks!
