Our local club has a Marine tribute build every September. This year I stretched the topic a bit and built a ship named after a Marine. General Alexander Vandegrift was the first Marine General. He led the battle for Quadalcanal, won the medal of honor, and rose to commandant of the Marine Corps. After the war he was probably best known for keeping the Marines from being absorbed into the Navy. Gonna try to do him proud. I've chosen to do FFG-48, USS Vandegrift. Built from the 1/350 Academy Oliver Hazard Perry ship plus the Advance Pontos PE kit -fitted out in 1995. I've weathered her for an active cruise doing missile system tests. This build took 6 weeks start to finish. I used MCW lacquer paints for everything except life preservers and smoke, where I used Vallejo. Light ghost grey on verticals and a lightened mix with 10% white for center panels and oil canning down the sides(washed out in the latest photos though but it is there), and dark ghost grey for the horizontals with a 10% black mix for tonal var
