Otaki 1/12 trans am

Rod -
This kit is more than 50 years old and amazingly good. The original tires in my kit had decomposed to mush so I got some Tamiya RC tires, machined some rims and 3d printed some centres.
The kit comes with a motor, lights and wiring. Motor hidden in engine block, 4x AA in the fuel tank. It even has little uni joints on the tail shaft.

I've spent a bit of time trying to get the stance right. Out of box it sits quite high.

I have a cnc lathe at home. It has a 75mm spindle bore, a bit bigger than a hobby lathe 🙂

Dashbord looks incredibly good.

Dash gauge decals pinched from a 1/12 foose camaro kit. The original decal sheet only gives you 3 choices of screaming chicken and a big blue stripe. No badges or detailing of any kind. The silver trim is a separate piece. I glued some green felt on the floor for carpet.

I'm using SMS "green gold flip" for the body colour.

Some more progress. Body was painted white with a black fade under the horizontal crease along the side of the body. Then the green/gold pearl, then about 5 coats of green tinted clear. When it hardens I'll polish, add decals and put the final 2k clear on. The camera can't capture the color, it looks nice sitting on the bench 🙂

This is my first 1/12 car. It needs way more paint than a 1/24! I used 2-1/2 bottles of sms pearl. Instead of using hobby clear coat I bought a can of clear acrylic spray from the auto parts store and decanted it for mixing and airbrushing. Good quality paint and much cheaper!

Rod -
I glued the boot shut as the fit wasn't perfect and there's nothing to see in there anyway (4x AA batteries, loaded from the bottom). I also am not confident the opening doors will work perfectly so I glued one shut. That way at least one side of the model will look clean if the door fit is a bit crappy.

Pic 11 is probably closest to what it actually looks like. All the pics look sort of aqua and over exposed. In reality it's a bit darker with a fine pearl effect.

Making progress! Only a handful of parts left to fit. The lights look super cool. The kit comes with small globes, much nicer than LEDs.

I am very happy I glued one of the doors shut as the one that opens doesn't close well. I will probably glue that one shut as well.

Looks good! First seeing the rims, I was struggling but at the end, they look pretty good.

With such a big scale one expects a perfect paint job. No disappointment here. Top job.

Perfection is hard to achieve over such a large area. Perhaps my airbrush wasn't clean enough, there are a few speckles here and there I'm not happy about. Overall it's good enough and some lessons were learnt.
