The project started with correcting the fuselage length of the Kittyhawk kit. A styrene plug was added, and the position of the radio compartment doors were adjusted to match station drawings
Here's some of the initial details built. Later research photos I found convinced me the interior was more likely interior yellow. I stripped it and repainted later.
This is the belly of the Special Hobby kit, which features the bulge that the Kittyhawk kit lacks. Most of the gearbay will be built from plastic stock and Eduard photo etch.
The Special Hobby belly will attach to the Kittyhawk outer wings. Here you can also see Eduard parts for the gear bays and gear doors.

Here's an update of my long-suffering P-39 Magnum Opus: the Kittyhawk kit opened up from the battery compartment in the back to the gun bay in the nose. I'm working back to front and I've finally got the rear bay built, painted (twice: first in interior green before I decided it was more likely interior yellow), and the empennage cables installed.
It's a big milestone, as I can now glue the fuselage halves together and begin building and detailing the engine accessory bay, then the engine, and then the cockpit. After that I'll add the wings, with all that requires, before finally building the open nose. Whew...
