This one is a real sand paper eater. But I'm channeling my inner Kerry Cox; no seam lines allowed!

Thanks guys. My father in law has been admitted to a geriatric psychiatric home for almost 5 years now. He had one of these in white/blue colours. As he absolutely doesn't want a white/blue one, I'm at liberty with the colours 🙂
I've narrowed my options down to Alclad Candy Orange, Indigo or Bottle Green.
Both of you are more experienced in bike building, any suggestions/tips/corrections are greatly appreciated!
Peter, yes you should 👍

i guess you have some vinyl tubing like more tamiya bikes... i usually insert a very thin copper wire on them, so you can give them the exact shape you want.
of course, you have the transparent ones now, that will be a great addition in the right places.
brave that you have removed the chrome, if you want it as shiny, you will need to polish the plastic and do a very nice back coat. i suggest black bright from alclad and alclad chrome.... it looks great when done correctly, but very unforgiving with any imperfection in the surface.... but i am sure you know about that already 🙂

I have the Alclad gloss black primer and used it before. I also have Alclad Chrome. I know how difficult it is to get right, hence the sanding, sanding and sanding 🤔
It couldn't be worse than the original chrome, the fit wasn't good enough.

Just been scraping and sanding on the exhausts and the manifold? (Part where four tubes enter and two leave) How will I realise a nice clean weld-like join? Diameteers are different and angles seem off 🙁

For the weldlines you could try the same thing as on AFV weldlines, but with finer tools: soften the desired area with glue, and apply nice clean 'weldbeads' with a very fine injection needle. But best dull it down a bit beforehand, or the ridges tend to get rather sharp 🙂
For reference there are tons of photographs of nice exhausts or bicycle/motocycle frames on the web😄

Peter, Greg, help! Lode is being mean to me 🙁 (And right, just don't tell him that)
René, thank you for the tip. I can image that the weldlines on an AFV are a bit cruder than those on chromed parts on an expensive Japanese commercial bike. Experiment time!
I also need to experiment on removal of Alclad paint. The Candy silver base is merciless on exposing every scratch. I sanded these pieces better than I ever sanded a plane, but the result is scary….

Hence the slightly dulled, small injection needle🙂 for afv I use a medium one in combination with a toothpick sanded to a nice smooth rounded point.
Works nicely, biggest problem I have is the right dosage of glue😄
Good luck with the removal 🙁 alclad is quite tough I believe. I'd try revell airbrush clean or gunze thinner... With anything hotter I'd be scared to damage the part 😮

I received a message from the modelling gods today. I don't know why they chose me and it's in funny English:
Thou shan't strip Alclad Candy Silver Base with Alclad Lacquer Thinner. If thou does, thy plastic shall melteth. Thou shall sandeth for hours in penance.

There's a fine line between brave and plain dumb. Ask Lode on which side of the line I am 😉
After a second run with the finer cloths I remembered I have 2 polishing compounds, a rotary tool and 2 special polishing wheels..... So I started up the proxxon and went to work. To the naked eye it looks better than before. A new layer of Silver will reveal the truth.
Oh, I didn't lose my mind, it was mine to give away!

Martin, dear Martin! Learning curves must be taken at a speed you can maintain control. I am guilty of thinking in the past that building a car or a bike would have to be easier than a ship. Found out the hard way that it is in fact every bit as difficult as a 1000 count pe pack. This is where I gained total respect for the skills involved as demonstrated admirably the likes of Alex G and Kerry and Timmy Heimer. I use SMS paint stripper to remove Alclad and I have removed a lot of it! Works a treat! The plastic has to be polished as shiny as you can get it. 12000 grit if you have it.

What I've learned in the past three years is that this hobby has evolved drastically in the 20 years I lost sight of it. I've built planes, ships, cars, bikes and trucks in my youth. But the overall quality of the kits and available tools has chaged a lot. Now it's possible to get a result that was unheard of in the day. Still adapting to this, this site is a great help with all the mates 👍

I'm having fun by the buckets. Just spend 2 hours this morning sanding the frame, to get rid of the mold lines. I think I decided to just polish all the parts after prep work, to get a decent finish.
Pete, so this brick wall I've been looking at for years that goes all the way up till heaven, it is actually a fence?

Born in '76. To celebrate, the Yanks painted all their planes in Dutch Red, White & Blue and added 76 😉 google.nl/search?biw..0.0....0.X8VuERw2Cjk
Some things I don't understand. The engine needs to fit in the frame, which is split lengthwise. To get te frame to look like welded tubes, I need to glue the two halves and sand a lot. But then it's nearly impossible to get the engine in. And painting both after assembly looks impossible to me. So I glued the front part of the frame and hope that after painting, I'll be able to get the enige in without scratching too much.
Kerry, yes it will be Alclad Chrome. I need to decide which end part I'll be using on the exhaust. There is an internal end to the muffler, that needs to be black. An alternative is a chromed end that needs to be flush with the exhaust. Options, options, who needs them?
The colour of the bike has been decided by popular vote: Alclad Candy Orange. This requires a baby skin smooth surface, so more sanding and polishing it is! And no René, that's not the best part 😉

'76... I feel much younger now!😛
Still get asked for ID when buying alcohol sometimes...
Can't you wrap the engine in saran wrap after mounting it into the frame?
If it's sanding once, it's ok. But sanding... priming... Crap, scratches. Again... And again... Oh I messed up the rescribing too... Filling... Sanding AGAIN... Nope not fun.
Main reason why I'm procrastinating my 262 at the moment.
So yeah I'm a big fan of sanding 😄

Martin, having built a number of Honda street bikes in the past and having actually worked on the full scal 1:1 versions, the engine fits in the same way as the real thing, having one of the support brackets held back until the engine is actually installed in the frame, so, resist putting all the attachment points on the frame before the engine is installed, as this will reduce the 'scratching' to a minimum and make it easier to install.
The black butt of the exhaust should look good against the candy Orange. 👍
Looking forward to your skills showing through mate, just don't install the engine cover upside down with the honda name on it. hahahahahaha 🙂
AND, I just noticed in image 25 that you have got both support brackets installed when I THINK one of them was to be left off until the engine was actually in the frame. Please, correct me if I am wrong, but I feel I am correct. 👍

René, I've got some of Kerry's magic stuff, parafilm. Perhaps that'll work.
Kerry, that's what's puzzling me. It's hard to get the front of the frame (at the top) look like a tube and get the engine in easily. I left the back end unglued in the hope it helps.
Just finished priming some parts. The parts are not exactly Kerry Quality, but good enough for me on this try. Way better than the first one.
One of the exhausts is primed in silver base, the other in gloss black. As there's additional sanding needed there, I decided to use them as a testbed. Tomorrow a quick spray of chrome to check what looks beter. Although the silver is almost good enough to pass as chrome. What do you guys think?
Kerry, thanks for the logo tip 😉

Martin. There was one CRITICAL thing I failed to mention.
The oil filter.
That is the finned thing in image 12 and 27 that protrudes from the lower front of the engine, and should have been left off until the engine is in the frame, otherwise it could prove difficult getting the engine in the frame easily.
AND, all Honda engines are installed from the left side of the frame (Looking forward from riders position).👍
The parrafilm should work for protecting what's been done but be careful cutting it off, as you don't want to put score marks into any of your work. !
But looking good Martin. 👍

WWKCD is the root cause of all of my engine troubles! In the old days I would have glued the frame without ever looking back at seam lines. WWKCD just doesn't always mesh with following instructions. It does give better looking results in the end 👍
The oil filter is glued in place, so I'll have to take my chances with parafilm or something else. Perhaps I'll wrap the frame instead of the engine. Any score marks would be on the inside of the frame, less annoying than a scratched engine.
René, I don't like you! That spot is only visible on the pictures, not in real life. I think I'll take my chances with that one. Thank you anyway, please call out any faults you see, I am still willing to learn from everybody 😄

Martin.
I noticed In image 4, the oil filter is number 17, and the bottom of the engine half is 18 with the plate for the oil filter attached, and gluing that oil filter on before your engine goes in the frame has prevented the smooth operation of that task. Did it say to do that in the instructions. ?
That is why your having issues with trying to make the engine go into place.
I would try to remove the oil filter and smooth the area then, glue it back once the engine is in the frame, as being that low down visually, it will not be noticed that you have 'made repairs'. 🙂

Kerry, the filter wouldn't budge. I daren't try any harder as I was afraid of damaging the parts.
Pete, coincidentally the fabulous mrs Oostrom spilled some body oil last night 😄 so I might get a free pass.
I painted some chrome on the exhaust for a test. Hardly any difference between the black base and the silver base. The chrome is more shiny than the silver, so the chrome will be painted.
I sprayed the orange as well. If you're an accomplished airbrusher, it gives you amazing control for the opacity of the colour. As I'm not accomplished, I went for the full colour experience. It looks great, just not as glossy as I was expecting. It's more a silky shine, nice nonetheless. Some light polishing and then a glosslayer could do the trick I think.

Martin, you have done a wonderful job mate. 🙁 👍
The colour of the tank and fender and rear tool box looks as it should, and the clear gloss over the top of that (I am assuming) will look awsome. 👍
Never mind about the oil filter, that experience is now well and truly in the memory bank of what not to do with all Honda models......for sure. 🙂
BTW, I have found that with alclad chrome over gloss black comes up even better with a light buffing, just to smooth the chrome particles down to eliminate that fuzzy look you get straight after spraying the chrome. It reminds me of the Testors 'buffing metalizer' paints I used to use, which I might add are still available and well worth a try. 👍
In general, a most enjoyable build to watch, and well done mate. 🙂 👍
Martin, you have done a wonderful job mate. 🙁 👍
The colour of the tank and fender and rear tool box looks as it should, and the clear gloss over the top of that (I am assuming) will look awsome. 👍

Buffing. Now there's a new word for me. Does it mean gently rubbing with a soft cloth?
I'd like to get a slightly oily look on the drive chain. I'm not getting there soon, just comes to mind. Any suggestions? Or just rub it with migs oil and grease mixture?

Martin, the chains are usually light in colour, steel, but I create the dirty look with the Tamiya panel line wash after I have covered the exposed chain with XF-56 enamel, and the wash will highlight the individual links a lot better, especially after you have wiped away the excess wash. 🙂
'Buffing', 🙂. Yes, lightly rubbing the surface with either a cotton bud, soft cloth, and in some cases, a tooth brush for things like chains or engine detail. Buffing. hehehe 🙂

I've found mico-fibre clothes (like the ones you use to clean your glasses) work well for buffing a paint job... and that's about all the advice I have to share on this masterpiece...

No drinking yet besides the first Espresso before sunrise but...
Those alclad metallics are bombastic. Tons of preparation needed seemingly but the finish... Oh my.
And the red is stunning already. Like a frosted over cherry😄 mind coming over to Berlin to give my car a new coat? 😛
Are you going to go full Kerry-Cox-mode on the engine as well?😉

This thing is sapping my mojo. Each and every part has mold lines to sand away. Almost half way with the 600 grit. As most pieces are high shine or metallic, that means I need to polish each and every piece as well. All this prep work is energy draining. I think I spend an hour on each of the rear springs. Those were poorly molded and needed a lot of sanding to look almost acceptable.
I forgot to thank you guys for the very nice comments and the buffing manual 😉 I've got several micro fibre cloths that should do the trick.
Rene, I'm in no mood for Kerry-ing up this build. Perhaps when all the sanding and polishing is done, I might give it a small go.

You know what I found helpful? Don't refer to it as "prep work". That makes it sound like it's just the useless stuff you need to do before you start the job. It's not... it's part of the job. Probably the main part.
In my day job I do a lot of consulting with export companies - many of whom are not prepared to do their homework before entering the market - and I tell them 90% of the job we call "painting" (usually referring to a room in a house... not a MiG-21... but whatever) is spent using drop clothes and painters tape. If you start the job on Friday after work you're lucky if you see a can of paint by Sunday afternoon. The reason we hate that is that the job is called "painting" not "taping" so we think we're not making progress.
But as we all know, if you mask properly, you can spray your airbrush all over the place and everything comes out looking just fine. 🙂

"Reminds me of when I was physically a kid" is my new saying. I usually listen to Jazz - the good kind, Dave Brubeck, Thelonius Monk, Sarah Vaughn, etc. Not the "adult contemporary" stuff people sometimes confuse with it - as well as Classical. But since I watched the movie Atomic Blonde on a plane this past summer I started listening to 80s music for just that reason. It was a bit dangerous though, I was on the bus on my way to the office listening to music and my Deezer "flow" tossed in Rage Against the Machine. By the time I got off the bus I was shoving Korean grannies out of my way and screaming "fight the power! Motherf*&$er!"

I like to listen to classical classics, 50 and 60s radio stuff, 70s rock and Australian country, especially Slim Dusty and John Williamson. Mam likes Thai traditional stuff. I don't.

Colourful mix of music tastes around here! Nice!
AC/DC was my #1 music for riding my bicycle back in Hannover👍
Peter😄 nope I'm not really into that kind of stuff. Never drunk enough for it! 😉 Leather jackets, shoes and carseats are nice though.
My music taste might be a bit weird. I like a bit of Piano sometimes, can't tell many names though. Mr. Einaudi comes to mind. I actually tried some Jazz last year, but it's not really for me.
80s stuff is ok-ish, I love listening to Icehouse while driving. 90s... Yeah getting there. But not the radio diarrhea, more like trance and techno from that era until early 2000s. Wellknown artists are chicane, Kai tracid, 4 Strings, Paul van Dyk... That kind of stuff, with toes dipping into early hardstyle. Sometimes relaxed, vocalbased and sometimes a bit faster or 'harder'.
But at the moment I'm all over metal again. Dio, Amon Amarth, Judas Priest, Helloween, Bolt thrower, children of bodom, early metallica... To name a few.
My SO declared me insane for listening to that "horrible noise"... Total nutjob here. 😛
In sum I don't really have a fixed music style I like, more like a core selection (which consists of about 60% rock/metal) I like the most with lots of other stuff I like added which sometimes doesn't fit. At all.
Can't tell if that's normal or healthy though 😉
I try new things though all the time, ending up like Greg wondering what the heck just happened. Usually when youtube or soundcloud sends you on a journey to the obscure places.
One can find lots of good things diving into the unknown🙂
Dang. That's long. And my boss almost caught me. :|

Actually had to go throught the collection in Media Player to see what I like else. Does that make any sense? It's just too much.
ABBA, BB King, Clapton, Blues Brothers (Nostalgia!), Bryan Adams, Buddy Guy, Chet Atkins, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Dave Brubeck, Diana Krall, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, Garth Brooks, George Strait, John Mayer, Beethoven, Mozart, Micahel Bublé, Michael Jackson, Norah Jones, Ray Charles, Robbie Williams, Ry Cooder, Paul Simon, Stevie Ray Vaughan.
And that's just the favorites, I have 4.687 songs on the PC, good for a mere 305 hours of music.
What I don't like is most of the stuff Rene listed 😉 No heavy metal, no trance/techno etc, no rap. Of course there might be a song here or there that's nice, but in general no. So I agree with Peter, unless you adjust your musical style, no admittance to the pub 😄

Excellent job Marty. I'm sure it will be appreciated. A gift from the heart at a difficult time.

So sad for your loss and hard to find words.
Sometimes these situations in life on the edge, shows what we are able to do with heart, body and mind.
All the best for you and your family

Gecondoleerd Martin, kan me voorstellen dat dit je zwaarste project ooit. Wel iets om aan terug te denken en zelfs trots op te zijn. Mooi dat je dit hebt gedeeld met ons....

Thanks once more guys. Much appreciated. I'm very happy I got the bike finished just in time, even though it meant working overtime until 1 in the night.

I am sure your going to celebrate his life and all his achievements Martin. As by the sounds of things, he was one hell of a man. Our prayers and thoughts are with you and your family.
Amen. 😉
