AREA 88 : Kamikaze (Cessna 172)
1
October 5, 2018Technically this kit is pre-assembled... but I think we can do better.2
October 5, 2018Now that is going to be a TIGHT fit. The Cessna’s cowling isn’t as round as most propellor planes.3
October 5, 2018Let’s take it apart and see what’s what.4
October 5, 2018I’ve thinned the inner cowling as much as I dare... will the motor fit?5
October 5, 2018It fits, but the engine shaft needs an extension. Maybe not quite that long though...6
October 5, 2018Well, it all fits... now to make it look as good as possible in the process.7
October 9, 2018Seats painted black and the motor is installed...so far so good...8
October 9, 2018Disaster! The tolerance level for the motor is very small and I accidentally got glue in the wrong spot while trying position the motor very precisely. Then I managed to make a huge gouge in the underside and got glue all over the tail.9
October 9, 2018Paint mostly stripped and seams (and errors) sanded down.10
October 9, 2018Popped the hood a bit... more sanding.11
October 10, 2018Looks like there’s a gap on top that’ll need plenty of love too.12
October 15, 2018Time to paint the passengers... Shin, Ryoko and her father, Zenzou.13
November 26, 2018Ok. Time for a do-over. This time I got a box for the kit.14
November 26, 2018The pre-painted sprues inside are all the same as before.15
November 26, 2018I used the shaft of a syringe to extend the motor. This will work much better than trying to squeeze it under the cowling.16
November 28, 2018Paint has been removed from the main fuselage. A bit of 1200 grit sanding, lots of Tamiya Lacquer thinner and even more cotton swab scrubbing.17
November 29, 2018The cabin is packed tight... no room for figures I guess...18
November 29, 2018Canopy/upper wing and wheels glued on.19
November 29, 2018Placement Preview interlude20
November 30, 2018Windows masked and painted.... white.21
December 2, 2018Looks like a lot of masking...22
December 2, 2018Another test set up.23
December 2, 2018Not quite good enough though... some paint bled through.24
December 3, 2018Ok... so masking... take two!25
December 3, 2018Ok... that takes care of the under-spray... next up... taking care of the overspray.26
December 4, 2018More masking... this time covering up the red and touching up the white.27
December 4, 2018Success! Or as close to it as I’m allowed to get.28
December 4, 2018Still some clear coating and decals to apply, but time to dry fit the base.29
December 5, 2018Decals and a tiny bit of weathering... and we’re done!30
December 5, 2018There we go!31
December 5, 2018I’m pleased with how the tiny little Yamato Airlines logo came out.32
